When COVID-19 hit, we realized not only was clarity of thought needed more than ever, but so was community. Writing is important, but even more important is access to basic needs. With schools shut downs, many MW kids were losing the free breakfasts and lunches they counted on.

The effect of COVID-19 is felt particularly hard in our most vulnerable communities— especially at our El Futuro site in the 9th Street Market, where many of our students and parents rely on restaurant wages and service jobs for survival.

With schools closed and restaurants, bars and other service industries shut down across the city, access to food and funds became a challenge. Many of these families are immigrants, which poses extra risks and challenges during this time.

We offer free lunches-to-go Mon. through Fri. at two MW locations.

In response, Mighty Writers created a five-day-a-week lunch-to-go program for MW kids and families. The free lunch program serves as a nutritional asset but also a way to communicate daily with kids in communities where access to a computer and wifi is often challenging. In every free lunch, we insert literacy games, puzzles, writing contests, mindfulness tips and fun grammar challenges. The kids work through the materials, and return them to us the next day

Every donation here supports the future of Philadelphia's most vulnerable students and ensures that their voices remain heard, their stories get told and no one goes to bed hungry.
